Humphrey Price-Jones was born in 1941 at Pantymwyn, North Wales. In 1959 he moved to London to study at Wimbledon School of Art, completing the National Diploma in Design (majoring in graphic design and illustration) in 1962.
During the period 1959 - 1965 he exhibited works in the Fine Arts Society Galleries, London; the Tryon Gallery, London; the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and the Chelsea Artists Exhibitions, London. He also produced book illustrations, book cover designs as well as graphic designs for print media advertising and television.
In 1965 he moved to Denmark where he lived and worked for the next three years and studied shore birds, waterfowl and birds of prey on the island of Zealand.
1968 saw another move, this time to Australia where since 1970 Humphrey Price-Jones has owned and worked a beef cattle property, "Glan Aber", near Crookwell on the Southern Tablelands of NSW.
Although a wildlife artist, his great talent as a landscape painter is evidenced by being awarded two major prizes in this genre in the 1970s - The Rural Bank Prize for Landscape Painting at the Sydney Royal Show and The Sydney Waratah Festival Prize for Landscape Painting.
His first one-man exhibition in Sydney was in 1979 at the Barry Stern Galleries where his work featured in several subsequent, major one-man exhibitions and many mixed exhibitions throughout the 1980s.
Humphrey Price-Jones' combination of scientific and artistic skills is particularly evident in his book "Australian Birds of Prey" which he wrote and illustrated. The book depicts Australia's 24 species of birds of prey in superb paintings complemented by black and white drawings and detailed descriptions of the birds, their habits, hunting methods and breeding cycles. The book was published in a limited edition as well as a trade edition. It is one of the most significant works of its type produced in Australia.
Between 1988 and 1991 he completed 100 paintings of birds and mammals commissioned by Lord McAlpine of West Green.
Price-Jones' work has been the subject of articles in numerous journals, newspapers and periodicals including Poll, Woman's Weekly, Highlife, The Land, The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald. He has also been interviewed on television and on a number of occasions by ABC Radio on the subjects of Wildlife and Wildlife Art.
The Victoria State Library Archives interviewed Humphrey Price-Jones in 1984 regarding his work and his contribution to Australian art.
